Nigeria is one of the world’s largest markets for sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs). Rising SSB intake has contributed to increasing rates of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease — placing pressure on an already strained health system, with disproportionate impact on low-income populations.

Making Prevention Policy

Gatefield reframed the soda tax debate from fiscal policy to health justice, shifting attention from economic resistance narratives to the lived burden of non-communicable diseases. We convened the National Action on Sugar Reduction (NASR) coalition, bringing together 13 leading health organizations including the Diabetes Association of Nigeria, Nigerian Cancer Society, and Nutrition Society of Nigeria.

We strengthened the evidence base through national perception research and policy briefs that translated technical health data into accessible public messaging. Stakeholder forums, expert roundtables, and policy dialogues aligned civil society, health experts, and government stakeholders around the urgency of intervention.

Public advocacy translated policy into culture with PSAs, influencer campaigns, explainer content, and street-level activations reframed sugar consumption as a national health issue rather than an individual choice.
